Service History

The two masted wooden scow-schooner Emily Leighton was built in 1867 at Port Huron, Michigan by Frank L. Leighton. In 1874 and 1875 the vessel was valued at $4,000 and rated B1. The Emma Leighton was familiar with the waters of Door County. She had transported cord wood and bark from Fish Creek, Sister Bay and Rowley's Bay, as well as piers on the Michigan side, to Milwaukee and Racine.

Last Document Of Enrollment Surrendered: Milwaukee: 9/30/1885: "Vessel Lost".
Final Voyage

"The scow schooner Emma Leighton and the schooner Belle, both of Racine, lying at Porth's Pier in Rowley's Bay (Door County, Wisconsin), were driven ashore in a heavy sea during a storm from the East North East Sept. 8, 1885. The Leighton went through the pier carrying away seven cribs. She was a total loss because the lines to the pier parted and her anchors would not hold. The scow was loaded with 40 cords of wood for Milwaukee, Captain George C. Thompson and a crew of three. The estimated value of the vessel was $1,200 and the cargo $60." Door County Advocate 9/17/1885
