with the registry number of 91096. In 1874 theMaria
was valued at $3,000 and rated B2 by the Board of Lake Underwriters.

" A vicious tempest with heavy rain was raging the night the schooner Maria
was docked near Tortenson's pier in hedgehog Harbor. She was loaded and ready to depart from Milwaukee when the storm rolled in off the lake. Captain Peter Anderson of Milwaukee tried to secure the vessel by dropping anchor, but it failed to hold. At about 7 pm, the craft hit shore and was lost.."
