Service History

The schooner Bay State was built in 1855 at Buffalo, New York. In 1882 she was used in the ice trade between Little Sturgeon and Chicago. As early as mid-1895 she was used to haul stone. The remainder of her life appears to be in the stone trade although she was used to haul lumber at times.
Final Voyage

Early in 1903, three wooden schooners were moved from the boneyard below the Leatherm and Smith dock by the tug John Leathum where they were dismantled, loaded with stone and sunk off the Leathem and Smith dolomite quarry dock at the mouth of Sturgeon Bay. The Emerald, Kate Hinchman, and Bay State thus became submerged cribs ending their lives as part of a proud fleet.
