Last Document Surrendered Chicago 9/30/1875: "Vessel Total Loss"
Final Voyage
"The schooner
St. Peter, bound down from Chicago with a cargo of 8000 bushels of wheat, foundered about thirty-five miles northeast from this port on Tuesday night, her crew reaching here in the small boat at an early hour yesterday morning. Capt. G.W. Flood, who also owns the
St. Peter and her cargo, reports that when the leak was first discovered the vessel had two feet of water in her hold; and gained so rapidly on the pumps that when it was determined to abandon her she was in a sinking condition. The
St. Peter was... rated B1 and valued on the registry at $4500. The loss is fully covered by insurance. The craft had been lying in our harbor for several days, windbound, and only took her departure on the morning of the disaster."
