WHS archaeologists and volunteers are actively engaged in bringing the excitement of Wisconsin 's shipwrecks to both divers and non-divers. Through public presentations and workshops, these educational initiatives are aimed at promoting preservation and placing shipwrecks within the broader context of Wisconsin 's rich maritime history. Check out the WHS calendar of events for upcoming presentations and get "submerged in history."

Several regional organizations also seek to preserve historic shipwrecks. The Wisconsin Underwater Archaeological Association, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society lead the way in advocating zero-impact diving and observance of state and federal laws regarding shipwreck looting. This "self-policing" is essential to keeping Wisconsin 's historic shipwrecks intact for future generations to enjoy and study.

Documenting shipwrecks is essential to preserving them, and the above groups have contributed to a better understanding of Great Lakes maritime history through archaeological fieldwork. If you are interested in helping preserve Wisconsin 's Great Lakes shipwrecks, contact one of these organizations and get involved.
