The Fedora wreck provides valuable information about the construction of large Great Lakes wooden carriers. Although fire destroyed much of the ship, the remains might qualify for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The Fedora site is located outside National Lakeshore boundaries and should be considered for inclusion in any future state bottomland preserve areas or National Marine Sanctuaries in Wisconsin's Apostle Islands.

The primary threat to the Fedora is divers scavenging for artifacts. The site should be monitored for artifacts exposed by shifting sand. Divers should leave artifacts in place, document them and report them to the Wisconsin State Archeologist, phone (608) 264-6495.

The infestation of zebra mussels in the Great Lakes also could endanger the Fedora wreck. Sitting in shallow water, the vessel provides an attractive habitat for these mollusks.

The Fedora is owned by the State of Wisconsin and is managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society , with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources . Like all historic shipwrecks in Wisconsin waters, the Fedora is protected under Wisconsin law as a state-owned archeological site.

You can get information about diving at the Fedora site from local dive shops.

Please help us preserve this piece of our maritime heritage. If you visit the Fedora, please take only pictures and leave only bubbles.
