The steamer Lizzie Madden towed Noquebay and its sister ship Mautenee out of Bayfield, Wisconsin, on Oct. 6, 1905. Their destination was Bay City, Michigan. The Noquebay was carrying 600,000 board feet of hemlock lumber, which was bound for lumberyards in Buffalo, NewYork. Approximately 20 miles northeast of Bayfield, the Noquebay caught fire in the forward part of the ship, apparently around the donkey boiler . The crew was eating lunch in the after deckhouse at the time, so no one noticed the flames until they were widespread, and it was too late to fight the blaze.

The Lizzie Madden turned toward Stockton Island, the nearest landfall, in an effort to beach the burning vessel. Meanwhile, the Noquebay's crew tossed approximately 175,000 board feet of lumber overboard before they had to abandon the ship. It appears there was no loss of life.

The Noquebay burned to the waterline and came to rest in Julian Bay near Presque Isle Point on the east side of Stockton Island. The Lizzie Madden and Mautenee went on to Sault St. Marie, Ontario, where they wired to Buffalo that the Noquebay and its cargo had burned.
