During the summer, a special mooring is placed at the Noquebay wreck, both for the convenience of divers and to prevent anchor damage to the wreck. The mooring is for dive boats only. Other boaters must anchor at least 200 feet away from the wreck.

Shifting sand continuously covers and uncovers different artifacts, so new discoveries are possible with every dive.

Scuba divers must obtain a free diving permit before diving on the Noquebay or at any site within a quarter mile of any Apostle Islands National Lakeshore shoreline. These permits and waterproof dive guides are available at the park headquarters in Bayfield and at the Little Sand Bay visitor center.

You can learn more about the Noquebay's history and archeological findings in Submerged Cultural Resources Site Report: Noquebay by Toni Carrell, Submerged Cultural Resources Unit, National Park Service, 1985; and Diver's Guide to Wisconsin by Steve Harrington with David J. Cooper, Maritime Press, 1991.
