Preserving the Pilot Island Wrecks

The wreckages of the Nichols, Forest, and Gilmore are important artifacts of the historical events associated with the lighthouse at Pilot Island and the heroic lifesaving efforts performed by men and women of the U.S. Light House Service. The wrecks of Pilot Island are also valuable sources of archaeological information pertaining to Wisconsin's maritime heritage.

The Pilot Island site and the lighthouse on the island are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The large amount of wreckage at the Pilot Island site offers a recreational diving opportunity of considerable interest. The Wisconsin Historical Society is working to place a mooring on the site to assist divers in locating the wrecks and to prevent damage from boats' anchors.

The Pilot Island wrecks are owned by the State of Wisconsin and are managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society with assistance from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources . Like all historic shipwrecks in Wisconsin waters, the wrecks are protected under Wisconsin law.
