Description
A tribute to the commercial fishermen of the Bayfield area, the Bayfield Commercial Fishermens' Memorial not only remembers those who have lost their lives at sea, but is also constructed from local maritime artifacts. Dedicated in 1981, the Memorial sits on the Bayfield docks and looks out over Lake Superior and Madeline Island several miles distant. The materials used in the construction of the memorial are a physical conglomeration of maritime history. The pilings are from the steamer Ireland which ran aground at Gull Island. The anchor chain is from the Pretoria which sank off Outer Island in 1905, while the timbers are from the Ashland ore dock. A plaque situated off Front Street overlooks and describes the memorial on the dock below. For further information contact the Bayfield Heritage Center.
