Description
The original Plum Island Lighthouse was built in 1849 and was decommissioned ten years later. The equipment was moved to the newly built, Pilot Island lighthouse. The Plum Island range lights were constructed in 1896 and first lit the following year. The lights are located on the southern end of the island, the Front Light to the east, the Rear Range Light about a third of a mile to the west. These lights guide sailors safely from Lake Michigan through this sometimes difficult passage into Green Bay. The Rear Range Light consists of a tubular and skeletal shaped tower sixty-five feet tall. A spacious two-story keeper's dwelling and a fog signal building stand nearby. The Front Range light was replaced in 1964 (Kargas, Keepers of the Light) Automated aids to navigation,Plum Island is owned and managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service in partnership with the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands. The island is open to the public from Memorial Day to Labor Day during daylight hours. You can view the Plum Island range lights en route to Washington Island via the Washington Island Ferry. Additionally, Shoreline Charters out of Gills Rock offer boat trips that cruise past the northern Door County lighthouses. The range lights are on the National Register.
