Description
The Sherwood Point Lighthouse sits on the south shore of the western end of Sturgeon Bay overlooking the entrance to Green Bay. Sherwood Point is a unique Door County light. It is the lone lighthouse in the county constructed of red brick and resembles an old red schoolhouse. The original light was first lit on October 10, 1883. Sherwood Point also holds the distinction and prestige of being the final manned light on the Great Lakes. It was finally automated on August 27, 1983.(Wisconsin Lighthouses, Ken and Barb Wardius) The Sherwood Point lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation, operated by the US Coast Guard. The grounds are private and the light and building are not open to the public.
