Wisconsin Point Lighthouse

Attraction
Description
Built in 1913, this Douglas County lighthouse is unique in that its base is oval in shape, while the concrete light tower is round. The structure is supported by a foundation secured in the lake bottom. Positioned at the west pierhead entrance to Superior Harbor at the western end of Wisconsin Point, a ten-foot-high concrete pier serves to anchor this light at the end of a concrete and giant stone south breakwater. Originally the walkway to the lighthouse was a two-thousand-foot pier with a steel cable for the keepers to hold onto when waves washed over the pier. Following a severe storm during the winter of 1967, the US Corps of Engineers placed huge boulders along the breakwater for added protection.(Wisconsin Lighthouses Ken and Barb Wardius) You can walk out to this lighthouse along the breakwater, which is largely covered with boulders, so be prepared for a fairly rough trek. The breakwater can be accessed from Wisconsin Point Road off Moccasin Mike Road in Superior.
