Description
On October 22, 1856, the Toledo, a steam screw carrying freight, merchandise and passengers, foundered and sank near Port Washington. Over 40 lives were lost. In 1900, her anchor was recovered from the waters of Lake Michigan, and a memorial was created in Port Washington's Union Cemetery to the Toledo's passengers and crew. The anchor is a tribute to the victims of the Niagara as well, which also sank off Port Washington less than a month before the Toledo, with over 60 lives lost. For further information on this monument and wrecks, contact the Port Washington Historical Society.
