Description
This forty-foot-high lighthouse was built in 1851-52 on a tiny peninsula on North Point Island, sometimes called Lighthouse Island, at the eastern entrance to Baileys Harbor from Lake Michigan. The rocks used in the circular tower are large, flat, and light-colored, harvested from the immediate area. The lantern room is an example of an old rare 'bird cage' design, so called because it does resemble a bird cage from a distance. This unusual lantern room is one of only three surviving on the Great Lakes today.' (Wisconsin Lighthouses, Ken and Barb Wardius) The light is not operational and the attached house is currently used as a private residence. Please respect the privacy of the owners. The lighthouse can be viewed from various places along the Baileys Harbor waterfront, including Ridges Road, near the Baileys Harbor range lights. Call the Door County Chamber of Commerce for more information.
