Description
Overlooking Lake Superior and the historic Soo Line Ore Dock, Ashland Memorial Park contains artifacts from the maritime logging days of Ashland. Sitting at the western edge of the park is a propeller from a mid-20th century rafting tug which towed pulpwood from parts of Minnesota and Canada to Ashland for processing. Over 50 years, one paper company alone rafted over 2 million cords of pulpwood. Nestled around the propeller are two boom logs which were used as part of the towing equipment, forming a boom with 450 other logs to tow rafts containing 3,000-12,000 cords of pulpwood. To the left of the propeller and boom logs rests a capstan. For further information on the history of the maritime logging history of the area, contact the Ashland Historical Society Museum.
