Final Voyage

Although not a shipwreck, this P & H Kobleco crane, Caterpillar front end loader, and debris field of industrial slag from a steel mill clean up, ended up on the bottom of Lake Michigan as result of a maritime mishap in 1997. The accident was witnessed by two local fishermen on a calm day. As the tug and the barge carrying the equipment and slag neared Rawley Point, the pair encountered strong currents that caused the barge to be pushed sideways to the tug. The tug captain throttled up to correct the unruly barge but water inside its hull rolled it over, dumping its contents.
Today

The crane and front loader debris field is a popular dive site with the P & H Kobelco crane sitting upright, and the Caterpillar front end loader laying on its side on a pile of slag in 130 feet of water. There are many tools and other objects interspersed between the slag pile.
