Description
The Mueller, formerly the Edwin C. Tice, was built in 1887 in Manitowoc, Wisc., and abandoned in 1935 near Sturgeon Bay. A two-masted wooden screw steamer, she was originally used for the Great Lakes lumber trades. In later life she carried stone and mixed cargoes, as well as acting as a tow for the Leathem and Smith Quarry, now the site of Olde Stone Quarry County Park. Today, the wreck rests in ten feet of water just off the shore of the county park. The recovered stern section of the Mueller sits at the edge of the parking lot at the northern edge of the park. The stern still has the screw and thrust bearing attached, as well as several spikes and plugs protruding. For those who wish to see part of a late-19th century steamer without SCUBA, the on-shore remains of the Mueller are a perfect opportunity.
