Final Voyage

"The scow Silver Cloud capsized ten miles northeast of this port early in the morning... Three sailors comprising the crew were picked up at 11 o'clock by the fishing tug Maria B.M. and brought to this city. One of the sailors told this story of the disaster: "we sprang a leak the day before...and had to work the pumps constantly to keep the vessel above water. Finally, when Capt. Johnson saw the squall coming, he ordered us to stop work and man the yawl. Then he started down into the cabin to get his wife and child out. While he was in the cabin a puff of wind struck the vessel and she went over on her side beam ends..." The Silver Cloud will undoubtably go to pieces when she strikes the beach. She was a schooner scow of 92 tons."
